Andrew Huynh received his BS from UC San Diego, and is now a first-year graduate student in the Computer Science and Engineering department. His research focuses on the application of machine learning to satellite images – in other words, teaching a machine to recognize what he is trying to find. In this case, Huynh is developing software that enables the computer to recognize archaeological sites from space, so that humans don’t have to sit and look through thousands of images. Dr. Albert Lin and the National Geographic Society are using this software for a crowd-sourcing project in Mongolia (one of IGERT-TEECH’s three field sites) to find and create images, in order to build a better map to guide future exploration in the region.
